Rebels with a cause: South boys get motivated vs. Hubs

After South Hagerstown softball coach Sabrina McCoy confirmed Alison Higgs was a junior, she readily admitted, "I'm smiling when I say that."

On a day when North Hagerstown's seniors were honored, it was the Rebels' left-handed pitcher who simply overpowered the Hubs, allowing just one hit - an infield single - and striking out 10 as South (7-7) claimed an 8-0 win over North (4-11) in the Monocacy Valley Athletic League on Wednesday.

"This is the best I've seen her," McCoy said. "She was so confident the whole time, mixed her pitches ... she kept the batters off-balance."

Higgs retired the first 13 batters she faced before losing her perfect game on Crystal McCormick's slow-roller to third that neither the third baseman or shortstop could make a play on.

Higgs said she wasn't aware of the perfect game, but wasn't worried about it, either.

"I don't think of that stuff, I just think, get the batter," Higgs said.

The southpaw did not allow a walk while striking out 10, and the defense behind her held their end of the bargain, commiting no errors.

"There were a couple (grounders) we could have bobbled, but they refocused and made the play," McCoy said.

Meanwhile, it was a South senior - Emily Middlekauff - who had the best day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two doubles, three runs and three RBI for the Rebels.

"Today, 3 was my lucky number," she said.

Middlekauff singled and scored in the second, reaching after a 12-pitch at-bat against North starter Dana Kline. Middlekauff fouled off six pitches with two strikes, most of them pulled past the third-base foul line, before finding her stroke.

"She was way back the first time up, but she stayed focused," McCoy said. "She's just an all-around good player."

Middlekauff doubled with the bases loaded and later scored in South's four-run third inning, then added an RBI double in the fifth, scoring on Mandi Winters' RBI single.
