A 7-year-old boy died Wednesday night after he fell beneath a wheel of the farm tractor he had been riding, Maryland State Police said.

Police did not release the boy's name.

When personnel from Community Rescue Service and the Maugansville Fire Department arrived at the farm on Pennsylvania Avenue near Showalter Road, the boy was lying on his back near the tractor.

He was taken to Washington County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, state police said.

The youngster was riding on the side of a John Deere tractor that was being driven by his 9-year-old brother when the accident occurred at about 8:30 p.m., troopers said.

The child was leaning against the left tractor fender when he apparently lost his balance and fell in front of the left rear tire, according to state police.

The tractor tire struck the youngster, causing serious injuries, police said.

Maryland State Police investigators remained at the scene, where they took photographs and conducted interviews.

State police said the investigation was continuing.
