Planners recommend two rezonings

The Washington County Planning Commission has decided Monday night to recommend approval of two rezoning requests, Planning Director Robert Arch said Tuesday.

The Planning Commission recommended approval of a rezoning requested by Triad Properties on 49.5 acres along Mount Aetna Road, about 3,000 feet east of the Robinwood Drive intersection. Triad wants the property to be rezoned from agricultural to residential suburban.

The residential suburban zone would allow minimum lot sizes of 10,000 square feet while the agriculture zone permits subdivision into 20,000-square-foot lots.

The property is across the street from the former Miller Farm, which was the subject of a controversial rezoning and annexation into the City of Hagerstown last fall.

The commission also recommended approval of a request by Evergreen Properties LLC to rezone land near the intersection of Eastern Boulevard and Potomac Street from business and agricultural to mostly residential.

The company has not stated what its plans are for the property, which is adjacent to the future site of Hagerstown YMCA.

The Planning Commission recommendations go to the Washington County Commissioners for final approval.

About 50 people attended public hearings on the rezoning requests at a March 13 Planning Commission meeting.
