Fall from Grace: Koontz and Trojans hand Broadfording its first loss

When it's your day, it's just your day.

Grace Academy's Mark Koontz hurled a four-hit shutout and did not allow a walk, then hit a two-run homer on top of it. ... The Trojans did not commit an error in the field. ... They had 10 hits and all 12 of their runs in the first three innings.

All of those things added up to a 12-0 win at Hellane Park over previously unbeaten Broadfording Christian.

Koontz struck out six batters during his five innings of work. Koontz retired the first eight batters that he faced.

"My curve ball and my slider were working real good today," Koontz said. "The ump gave me the outside corner most of the time. So, I just threw quite a bit of my pitches on the outside corner. My arm felt pretty good today."

Grace Academy coach Ed Sweeney was happy with Koontz' pitching performance.

"Mark Koontz threw pretty good today," Sweeney said. "He was able to throw strikes consistently. We have been getting good pitching all year from a few different players."

Grace Academy (6-2, 4-0 MDCC) hit three home runs against Broadfording (5-1, 4-1). In the first inning, Nathan Sweeney had a solo shot. During the third inning, Koontz hit his homer and Jason Kendall later added a three-run homer.

Jake Marquis and Sweeney had two hits each for the Trojans.

Dan Snyder got two of Broadfording's four hits. About the only highlight for the Lions on this day was Nathaniel Hirsch's over-the-shoulder catch in the second inning.

Koontz was grateful for all of the support that his teammates gave him.

"We hit the ball good today," Koontz said. "We hit line drives and we made contact most of the time. When we scored all of those runs, it took a lot of the pressure off of me. The defense backed me up really good. They just made the plays when they had to."

The Trojans had seven of their 10 hits during the third inning.
