April 26, 2000

WILLIAMSPORT - A Williamsport man was killed and his wife injured when their car and a pickup truck collided Wednesday afternoon on Md. 68 at Md. 63 east of Williamsport, Maryland State Police said.

William Lee Gower, 84, of 15950 Spielman Road in Williamsport, was pronounced dead at the scene at about 1:18 p.m., police said.

His wife, Louise, 78, of the same address, was listed in fair condition at Washington County Hospital Wednesday evening.

Police alleged that the accident occurred when a 1986 Ford Truck driven by David L. Schultz, 40, of 571 Stoneybrook Road in Warfordsburg, Pa., was westbound on Md. 68 and slid through a red light at the intersection with Md. 63. The road was wet at the time, police said.

Schultz's truck struck the Gowers' 1996 Chevrolet Caprice, which was traveling east on Md. 68, police said.

Police said Schultz was issued citations charging him with speed greater than reasonable or prudent for road conditions, negligent driving and driving through a red light.
