Local Roundup - Boonsboro's seven pitchers can't stop Brunswick

BOONSBORO - Chris Hill and Kevin Goode hit back-to-back homers in Brunswick's six-run seventh inning to withstand a strong effort from a pesky Boonsboro team for a 9-4 victory in a Monocacy Valley Athletic League game.

Hill's homer, a two-run shot, followed a triple earlier in the game. Goode added two singles with his homer for the Railroaders.

Boonsboro (2-9) used seven pitchers - one per inning - and held Brunswick to three runs and five hits while striking out eight in the first six innings.

Kevin Stouffer had two hits and John Quail doubled and drove in all four of the Warriors' runs.

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. - Jimmy Rhodes struck out six in a two-hit shutout, and the No. 4 Cougars got two runs in the first inning without a hit to move into the winners bracket of the BD&C Crystal Coast Classic.

In the first, Josh Green walked, stole second, moved to third on a groundout and scored on Craig Smith's groundout. Rhodes then walked, and courtesy runner Adam Webb moved to second on a balk. Donnie Dunn grounded to short, but the throw tied up the first baseman, and Webb came all the way around to score.

Jefferson (13-2) got its other run in the third, when Ethan Osbourn tripled and scored on a passed ball. The Cougars play West Craven (N.C.) today at 5 p.m. in Havelock, N.C.

Broadfording 13, MCA 5

Broadfording banged out 13 hits, including three from Daniel Bieber and two from Justin Anthony and Tim Koontz in a win over Martinsburg Christian Academy at Municipal Stadium.

Anthony had a double and a triple and three RBI, including two in the seven-run third. Koontz also had three RBI for Broadfording (4-0).

HANCOCK - Chris Dobrzanski had two hits, inclduing a three-run homer in the first inning, but Hancock (1-9) fell to Paw Paw.

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Greg Hershey had two hits, including a home run, and drove in three runs as Chambersburg (10-1) defeated West Perry. Chambersburg scored nine runs on 10 hits in the fifth inning.

CUMBERLAND VALLEY, Pa. - Cumberland Valley scored the tying run on a catcher's interference call in the seventh inning and won the game in the 14th inning.

Steve Stoner threw seven shutout innings in relief for Cumberland Valley, while Jeff Kirkpatrick tossed seven scoreless innings for Waynesboro (7-4).

Jacob Marquiss and Jason Kendell had two hits, while Nathan Sweeney had three hits, including a two-run homer, for Grace.
