Piedmont trailed 6-3 and was to its final strike in the ninth when the Boll Weevils decided to unload on Suns reliever Peyton Lewis (0-2), who relieved Josh Stevens with two runners on. Byrd reached on third baseman Robert Cosby's error and a second run scored on a passed ball before Nate Espy tied the game with a double off the center field wall.

The Boll Weevils got the winning run with a two-out rally. Buzz Henahan singled and Shomari Beverly and Brian Hitchcock walked, setting up Byrd's game-winning hit.

The Suns (8-7) jumped out to a 4-0 lead with two runs in the second on Mike Snyder's double to the right-field corner and two more in the fourth, keyed on Aaron Fera's RBI double.
