An Easter parade will be held Saturday in and around Public Square in downtown Hagerstown, a community group announced recently.

Scheduled parade entertainment and activities include a hat contest, Snickers the Clown, Ester Bunny, two barbershop quartets, face painting and a free lunch.

Parade events will run from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and will be on the sidewalks in the square and at the Masonic Temple at 54 S. Potomac St., according to a parade flier.

Streets will not be closed to traffic during the parade.

The idea came from the Downtown Chapter of Neighborhoods 1st, and its members are organizing the parade.

"It's to get people into the streets. ... So they're not afraid to use the streets," said Ted Bodnar, chapter co-chair.

City Public Information Manager Karen Giffin said it is the first time for this event but city and community officials hope it will become an annual activity.

Bodnar said most of the costs of the parade are being paid for with private contributions. He said the city is contributing $700 from its funding for Neighborhoods 1st groups, and the state is contributing $575 through its HotSpot anti-crime grant program.

All parade activities are free to the public except for photos with Ester Bunny, which will cost $5 each, Bodnar said.

Organizers are asking those who plan to attend to get tickets in advance so they know how many people to expect.

Tickets are available at Carson Jewelers at 8 Public Square, City Hall at 1 E. Franklin St., the Hagerstown-Washington County Convention & Visitors Bureau at 16 Public Square, Deb's Flowers at 52 E. Franklin St., the Jeweler's Daughter at 2 W. Washington St., Kitty's Thrift Shop at 90 W. Washington St., Pat's Magic Touch at 54 1/2 E. Franklin St., Turnover II at 146 Fairgrounds Ave., and the Washington County Free Library at 100 S. Potomac St.

The schedule of parade activities is:
