Students at 10 Washington County schools can expect to see new principals next school year.

Four principals are being moved to different schools and five assistant principals are being promoted, according to the Washington County Board of Education.

Many parents prefer a principal stay on through their child's graduation, but Schools Superintendent Herman G. Bartlett Jr. said the moves are made to improve the schools.

Having a new principal can bring innovation and enthusiasm to a school, Bartlett said after Tuesday night's board meeting.

The following changes were approved by a 7-0 vote on Tuesday night:

- Boonsboro Middle School will have a new principal and assistant principal. Assistant Principal P. Lynn Miller is being promoted to principal. April E. Bishop, who has been training at Boonsboro Middle to become an administrator, will be the school's new assistant principal.

The current principal, Janice S. Gearhart, will take over as supervisor of human resources/teacher personnel for the school system.

- Donna Newcomer-Coble, who is now supervisor of human resources/teacher personnel, will become principal at Hancock Elementary. Newcomer-Coble has previously been an elementary and resource teacher.

- Barbara J. Stouffer, who is principal at Hancock Elementary this school year, will become principal at Pangborn Elementary.

- Lincolnshire Elementary Principal Thomas W. Ingram will transfer to Smithsburg Elementary.

- Greenbrier Elementary Principal Dale I. Garlitz will move to Lincolnshire Elementary.

- Kathy J. Stiles, who is assistant principal at Eastern Elementary, will become principal at Greenbrier Elementary.

- Cascade Elementary Principal Carolyn S. Moore will move to Williamsport Elementary.

- Timothy R. Abe, who is assistant principal at Western Heights Middle School, will become principal at Cascade Elementary.

- Richard P. Akers, who is assistant principal at North Hagerstown High School, will become principal at Boonsboro High School.

- Michele A. Fagan, who is assistant principal at Williamsport High School, will become principal at Clear Spring High School.

Several of the moves were necessary to fill vacancies left by retirements, said Donna Messina, school board spokeswoman.
