Students poems win recognition

Three elementary school students were recognized Tuesday night by the Washington County Board of Education for published poems they wrote.

The students received certificates of commendation for the poems, which were published in the "Maryland Student Anthology 2000." The poems were selected from more than 500 submissions.

Erin Smith, a second-grader at Emma K. Doub Elementary, wrote a poem entitled "The Snowman's Dream," about a snowman that had a nightmare.

Kayla Gerhold, a third-grader at Emma K. Doub, wrote a poem entitled "The Little Monkey," about a monkey who preferred pizza over bananas and attended school.

Alicia Elkin, a third-grader at Boonsboro Elementary, wrote a poem called "My Favorite Seasons."

The poems were submitted to a statewide literacy and visual arts project called Celebration of the Arts in Maryland, according to the certificates.
