Woman killed, child injured in accident

A North Carolina woman died and her 3-year-old daughter was injured when their car went out of control on Interstate 81 and hit a tree Monday morning, Maryland State Police said.

Robin Lewis McGovern, 28, of Mooresville, N.C., was driving south on I-81 south of Maugans Avenue at 10:08 a.m. when her 2000 Toyota Camry entered the median and struck a tree head-on, police said.

There was no obvious reason why McGovern left the roadway, said police.

She was pronounced dead at the scene by a medical examiner, police said.

McGovern's daughter, Erin, who was in a child safety seat in the back seat of the car, was taken to the Johns Hopkins Medical Center in Baltimore. She was was listed in fair condition Monday night.
