April 06, 2000

A 2-year-old Hagerstown boy hospitalized in late March for injuries alleged to have been caused by child abuse at the hands of his father was reported in good condition Wednesday afternoon at Johns Hopkins Children's Hospital in Baltimore.

Joshua Matthew Howlett was flown to Johns Hopkins from Washington County Hospital on March 27 after he was diagnosed with a skull fracture, bruises and retinal hemorrhaging in both eyes.

The child's father, Donald Lee Kennedy, 29, of 12307 Learning Lane, has been charged with first- and second-degree assault, child abuse-parent and reckless endangerment.

He remained in the Washington County Detention Center Wednesday on $300,000 bond.

In addition to the skull fracture at the back of his right ear, Joshua had bruising on his mouth and chin, old and new bruising on his forehead, old bruising on the left eye, new bruising on the right eye, abrasions and bruising to right inner ear and blood behind the left eardrum, possibly caused by "boxing of the head," court records alleged.
