Gravestone pins boy

April 05, 2000

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A gravestone at a monument shop fell on an 8-year-old boy Tuesday afternoon, pinning his legs, according to firefighters.

The boy was playing at the Boys Club of Martinsburg on John Street about 5:42 p.m. when he went next door to the Martinsburg Granite Co., said Lt. Charles Eversole of the Martinsburg Fire Department.

Although it is unclear how it happened, a granite tombstone fell on the boy, Eversole said.

Firefighters could not lift the gravestone, so they place airbags under it and inflated them to free the boy, Eversole said.

The boy, whose name was not available, received a fractured left leg, a nursing supervisor at City Hospital said.

The boy's leg was put into a cast and he was expected to be admitted overnight for observation, although he was in good condition, the supervisor said.

"He really didn't complain about it at first," she said.
