Mail Call for 4/5

April 05, 2000

Editor's note - Please be as brief as possible when calling Mail Call, The Daily Mail's reader call-in line.

Mail Call is not staffed on weekends or holidays so it is best to call Mail Call during the week. The Mail Call number is 301-791-6236.

You are welcome to leave a recorded message on any subject, but some calls will be screened out.

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"To the Mayor of Smithsburg. I believe that you and the councilmen need to do a better job of screening police officers for our town. What I read in the paper last weekend made me sick on the stomach. To think of how long it took you to hire another headache for our town. We don't need more problems, we need a trustworthy police chief."

"I cannot believe my eyes when I read the Sunday's paper on the religion page. There was an advertisement for adult movies, toys and novelties. Who is asleep at the wheel at your newspaper to print something like that on the religion page?"

"To our daughter, Jane Campbell, who is a cheerleader for the Hagerstown Steelers. We are so proud of you and your team for winning the grand championship and two first place winnings on Sunday, April 2, in Myrtle Beach, S.C. We all love you. Mom, Dad, Michael and Mitch. Keep up the great work."

"Congratulations, Barb and Cheryl for the magnificent job in Myrtle Beach with the Hagerstown Steeler Cheerleading squad. You came home a winner."

"I am a student on the bus for a middle school. I want to know why things are happening? We have assigned seating, we have to only talk in a whisper, we can't even look out the windows and we are not allowed to turn around. Her discipline is getting worse, but nobody seems to care."

"My son has told me about a problem on his school bus. They are not allowed to turn around and talk to other people. They have assigned seating, they have one person in each seat, except for two or three that have someone else sitting with them. If you have an assigned seat with only you in it, how can you talk to someone if you are not allowed to turn around or that person in front of you can't turn around to talk to you? What is going on with this bus? I don't know what the bus driver's problem is, but I think someone needs to check her out."

"When are they going to take the 25 mph signs down in Boonsboro, since they made it 30 mph on Main Street? When is it going to happen?"

"My husband and I went to Red Lobster on Saturday, March 25 and some wonderful person paid for our dinner. They would not let the waitress tell us who they were. This is our way of saying thanks to you and God bless you. Maybe some day we will find out who they were."

"Why hasn't there been any recognition about the Dolphins Drill and Dance Team and the Hagerstown Steelers Cheer Teams trip to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina to compete in the Eastern Dance Association Finals? Instead of reading about negativity in Hagerstown every day, why don't we recognize something positive? Congratulations girls, you were wonderful!"

"I can't understand why the Hagerstown Housing Authority charges $300 for pets."

"I am calling to see if anyone knows what happened to the groundhogs at City Park? We would be able to drive past there and watch the groundhogs. Someone told me that they plugged the holes and killed them. Someone please call in and let me know what happened to them."

"I wanted to call and thank whoever planted the beautiful flowering trees through the nice clean town of Sharpsburg. There are very beautiful when you drive through it. I am from the outskirts of Sharpsburg and thanks very much."

"I have Betty Crocker catalog point coupons. I have hundreds of them. If anyone would like to have them, please leave your number in Mail Call and I will get back with you."

"I want to have a survey of all the people who watch basketball on Channel 9. If you are sick and tired of it, give CBS a call, the number is, 212-975-4321. I think we should protest them taking off good programs when there are other sports channels to put this stupid basketball on."

"Just a reminder, the gasoline protest is April 7 through the 12th. Fill your tanks before Friday."

"My daughter just had her Bronco up to have an emissions test. Now her motor has blown. I would like to know what they do to them up there and why do they have to rev them up so fast?"

"What is happening to the bus driver who drives for E. Russell Hicks? The children have to sit in assigned seats, one child per seat. They have to face forward, they can only talk in a whisper. How are they supposed to whisper to anyone? I heard that this has been going on for about three months now. Why is the punishment so severe?"

"Hello, Class of 1980. We are still looking for Arleen Ashford Mills, Thelma Becton, Diane Brown, Tina Grant, Valerie Lisi, Brenda Miley, Donna Kay Myers, Rebel Ridenour, Sue Seburn, Pam St. Claire, Allison Taylor, Ron Younkers, Joleen Springer, Gary Whittaker, Ronnie Martin, Donnie Martin and Gary Martin. If you guys are out there, give Robin or Tina a call. Robin's number is 301-739-0028 and Tina's number is 301-797-1932. We need to hear from you by the end of April."
