Hancock goes to work in Hancock

The Town of Hancock has hired someone with the town's last name, Kevin Hancock, to be the new water and waste water operator.

But his name never entered into the equation and there haven't been any jokes about it, at least not yet, Hancock Town Manager Louis O. Close said Monday.

"It just so happens that of all the applicants he stood out based on his past experience," Close said.

"We just think that it's an added bonus," Mayor Daniel Murphy said. "It's easier for us to remember the name maybe."

Kevin Hancock laughed when asked Monday if he sought out the job at the town because of his name. He applied for the job because it was the kind of work he wanted to do, he said.

A resident of Berkeley Springs, W. Va., Hancock will fill the position vacated in August by Jim Menhennick.

He beat out six other job applicants and will start work April 11, Close said.

Hancock has more than 13 years of experience in the field, including with the Villages of Glendale Heights and Oak Park and the city of Elmhurst, all in Illinois. He currently works for the VDO Corp. in Winchester, Va.

While doing work for the War Memorial Hospital in Berkeley Springs, he met his wife, who lived in Berkeley Springs, and later moved there, Hancock said.
