Shuttle astronaut to appear in Franklin

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Space Shuttle astronaut James A. Pawelczyk will be the guest speaker this weekend at the annual Franklin County Science Fair at Chambersburg Middle School, 1151 E. McKinley St.

Pawelczyk will speak to students and guests at the fair at 1 p.m. Sunday, according to Dr. Paul Sick, a regional principal for the Chambersburg Area School District and a member of the Franklin Science Council. The awards ceremony in primary, intermediate, middle, junior and senior categories will he held 2 p.m. Sunday.

The fair will be open to the public from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and noon to 3 p.m. Sunday. Sick said there are more than 700 exhibits by students from kindergarten through high school from all the school districts in the county, he said.

Students will be setting up their experiments Friday afternoon and Sick said they will be judged that evening.There are also awards sponsored by area businesses and organizations.

A highlight on Saturday will be the tower project with students competing to see who can build the tallest and sturdiest towers using just dry spaghetti and marshmallows, Sick said. "We feel it's a valuable experience for the kids in problem solving," he said.
