Alice M. Vucina

Alice May Vucina, 71, of 11518 Green Valley Drive, Hagerstown, died Sunday, March 26, 2000, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Nov. 22, 1928, in Beaver Falls, Pa., she was the daughter of the late William Orr and Edith Alma Welsh Blair.

She was a graduate of Beaver Falls High School.

She was retired from Two Guys Department Store and was involved with the Election Board.

She was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church of Williamsport, served on the Food Bank Committee, Altar Guild and Outreach Committee.

She was a member of American Legion, Morris Frock Post 42 Auxiliary; AMVETS Post 10; Williamsport Red Men Auxiliary of Williamsport; AARP; R.A.T.S. Club of Hagerstown; and Greenberry Knitting Club of Hagerstown.

She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Thomas P. Vucina; three daughters, Paula J. Block of Port St. Lucie, Fla., Marsha K. Parker and Patty A. Austin, both of Hagerstown; a son, James P. Vucina of Hagerstown; two sisters, her twin, Betty Lou Headley, of Beaver Falls, and Mary Martha Depace of Clearwater, Fla.; a brother, William J. Blair of Woodbury, N.J.; and eight grandchildren.

Services and burial will be private and at the convenience of the family. The Rev. W. Gregory will officiate.

There will be no visitation.

Memorial donations may be made to Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 35 W. Potomac St., Williamsport, MD 21795.

Arrangements are by Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown.

C. William Karn

C. William "Bill" Karn, 75, of 1042 S. Potomac St., Hagerstown, died Monday, March 27, 2000, at Washington County Hospital.

Born March 29, 1924, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Edgar Leroy Sr. and Clara Helen Hockman Karn.

He was employed by Hagerstown Fire Department for 30 years, serving as deputy chief and as acting chief for three years. He retired in 1984. He then was employed by Allsafe Fire Equipment Co. and Fire-X Sales & Service Co.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theater and was awarded the Purple Heart.

He was a member of International Association of Fire Chiefs; Cumberland Valley Fire Association; First Hose Fire Co.; American Legion, Funkstown Post 211; B.P.O. Elks 378; the Board of Community Rescue Service; was first president of Hagerstown International Firefighters Local 1605 and a member of Halfway Fire Co.

He is survived by his wife, Lucy Ruth Karn; a brother, Ronald H. Karn of Hagerstown; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, E. Leroy Karn Jr., Hubert L. Karn and Donald W. Karn.

Services will be Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Revs. Don R. Stevenson and John W. Ailstock will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Dwight L. Grove

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Dwight L. Grove, 85, of 781 S. Allison St., died Saturday, March 25, 2000, at Waynesboro Hospital in Waynesboro, Pa.

Funeral services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle. The Revs. Robert Cahill and Nelson Martin will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Greencastle.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the funeral home.

Iva W. Pitman

MOUNT LENA - Iva Wentz Pitman, 96, of 21176 San Mar Road, died Sunday, March 26, 2000, at her home.

Born June 7, 1903, in Philippi, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late James Abner and Lily Post Wentz.

Her husband, Brocile Lee Pitman, died March 27, 1992.

She attended Beaver Creek Christian Church.

She is survived by a daughter, Josephine Pitman Robinson, with whom she resided; a son, Richard Lee Pitman of Silver Spring, Md.; three grandchildren, Steven Pitman of Dayton, Md., Richard Robinson of Portland, Maine, and Lisa Connolly of Bay Shore, N.Y.; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three sisters and five brothers.

Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Bast Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro. The Rev. J. Mark Curran will officiate. Burial will be in Beaver Creek Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

James N. Martin Jr.

THURMONT, Md. - James Norris Franklin "Jim" Martin Jr., 51, of 7037 Blue Mountain Road, died Sunday, March 26, 2000, at Waynesboro (Pa.) Hospital, Waynesboro, Pa.

Born Oct. 10, 1948, in Thurmont, he was the son of James Norris Franklin and Janet Rose Haugh Martin of Thurmont.

He was a 1966 graduate of Thurmont High School and was senior class president.

He was formerly employed with Johnston Construction Co., Dover, Pa., as a pipe fitter.

He was a member of Harriet Chapel Episcopal Parish in Catoctin Furnace, Md. and served on the Building and Grounds Committee.
