March 13, 2000

Editor's note - Please be as brief as possible when calling Mail Call, The Daily Mail's reader call-in line.

You are welcome to leave a recorded message on any subject, but some calls will be screened out.

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"About the Domestic Violence articles in the paper. First and foremost, I want to say that they were very good and very informative to help a person get out of an abusive situation. I want to know who takes care of the children? My mother was in that sort of situation. We basically ran all the time. We were put in the situation of being harmed and she never pressed charges and never went through if she did press charges. Nobody was watching us when the cops came and nobody ever said, 'what about the children?' I think it should be addressed. What rights do we have and where can we turn to? I am an adult now, but maybe there are children out there now in that situation that don't know what to do. Maybe this would help them. Unfortunately, this is a lifetime cycle and it takes a lifetime to deal with."

"I wanted to let everyone know that the youngest fire chief in Washington County was, it is Earl from Company 11, he is only 20 years old and he became the youngest fire chief in Washington County."

"I want to wish Richard King a happy 38th birthday on March 13."

"I want to wish Barbara Karn a happy birthday on March 14."

"To the person who wants to keep rabbits off the tulips, put carrots around where you have the flowers and they won't bother the flowers then. When they see the carrots, they won't even think about bothering your flowers, they will eat the carrots."

"I keep reading that Hagerstown doesn't want another Wal-Mart. I am sure that Hancock will be willing to welcome one."

"I want to wish Jessie Mills a happy 13th birthday on March 14."

"I am a firm believer in the death sentence for a murderer. Some may not agree with me, but my belief is that if you murder someone, your life should end as well. A quiet protest about the judicial system, forget it. Watch who you vote for. Stand up to Congress and the system. I think it is time to impose the death sentence, right or wrong, it is time. I am all for it."

"The North Hagerstown High School Class of 1980 is looking for the following members to complete our roster for our reunion. Robert Bartles, Pam Barton, Trisha Carter, Wayne Gardner, Erin Heffon, James Kisel, Jim Hartis, Billy Dunn, Randy Cooper and Lester Brown. If you have any information about these individuals call Robin at 301-739-0028 or Tina at 301-797-1932."

"I want to congratulate Santana for making the honor roll. Good going, girl. I love you, Mom."

"Hello Dad, I bet you thought that your little girl forgot about 3-10-46. Surprise! Happy 54th to the greatest father on Earth. Thanks for always being there when I need you. Maelin says happy birthday, pappy. Have a great one and enjoy."

"Do you want to combat the high gas prices, join the national gas out on April 7, 8 and 9 to show the oil barons that we don't appreciate the high gas prices. The plan is not to buy any gas April 7, 8 and 9 nationally."

"I just love the big trees that my neighbor planted in her yard. They get bigger every year and they are so beautiful. It does a lot for my privacy, too."

"This is a response for the person with the flower and rabbit problem. Solution, moth balls and human hair. Rabbits hate both. I use tiny moth balls sprinkled in my flower beds. Go to a local barber and bag some hair and sprinkle it around as well. It sounds stupid, but it actually works. For your information also, rabbits love petunias. I say petunias are their favorites. Be careful where you plant them. Rabbits can wipe out a petunia patch in one night. They are heavy duty munchers. From experience, I know. Take advantage of the Washington County Free Library, they have a wonderful selection of helpful gardening help books. Very helpful, I check them out all the time. Good Luck."

"Happy Birthday on March 13 to Vincent McGurl, going into those terrible twos. May God help us. Happy Birthday, precious."

"To Jesse Mills, happy birthday, I love you very much."
