Mail Call for 3/7

March 07, 2000

Editor's note - Please be as brief as possible when calling Mail Call, The Daily Mail's reader call-in line.

Mail Call is not staffed on weekends or holidays so it is best to call Mail Call during the week. The Mail Call number is 301-791-6236.

You are welcome to leave a recorded message on any subject, but some calls will be screened out.

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"Before everyone starts complaining about the new Wal-Mart coming in and complaining about the empty storefronts all over town, if you would pay attention and listen to what you hear, Sam's Club is going to expand into the Wal-Mart building. So there isn't going to be an empty storefront."

"Anyone with any information on the following people can call Dawn Mills. I am looking for them to put together a small reunion. My number is 301-824-4772. They are Mark Miner, Shelly Brining, Stephanie Lenker, Sandra Sheetz, Jeanine Broadus, William Craighead, Billy Craighead and Jeff Pepple. If you have any information, please call me."

"The School Board went through all that money to buy those badges so that the people who came into Lincolnshire could read them and find out who is who. But most of them wear them down so low, you have to get down on your hands and knees to read them. If they are going to have these badges on, I think they should be worn up on their chest so we can see who they are."

"Can anyone tell me how many Wal-Marts, steakhouses and stadiums does Washington County need? What about all those empty stores? Why build new ones when there is so many empty ones sitting around."

"Spring is coming. Spring sports at our county schools are here, such as girls' softball, boys' baseball and track. So why would people who should have at least a small amount of common sense, jeopardize the health of our children and students, by walking their dogs on school property? Dog dirt carries a lot of diseases and believe me not all pick up their droppings. Many times, dogs are seen urinating on gym bags. I am in favor of the pet exercise areas, but why on earth would people choose our school athletic fields? If there isn't a law, I think there should be."

"To the person or persons that would like a photo of the men who were charged in the stabbing at Long Meadow, take a trip to West Oak Ridge. There are people there that feel the same way about their children that live around them. I say, get the law on the ball, I think they should be put where they belong."

"I see that they are planning on building a new Wal-Mart in the East End of town. This is what we really need around here instead of more steakhouses and grocery stores. We need a good Wal-Mart. The one we have now is good, but a super Wal-Mart would be wonderful."

"In reference to the new Wal-Mart store, I live on Edgewood Drive, I live in the Funkstown area and I am all for it. I see no problem at all with it. I think it is a good idea."

"Is O.J. Simpson getting any closer to solving the murder of his ex-wife?"

"I was reading about the boy being killed near the bowling alley. I feel sorry for the people because I know how they feel. I had a brother killed and his killer is running the streets. I just don't think this is fair and this happened in 1966. So what is wrong with the system? You tell me."

"I thought we were trying to take the violence off of the streets, but yet the two boys that were charged in those stabbings are out on the streets. Does this make any sense?"

"I am tired of reading about the stabbing that happened in Hagerstown. It sounds to be coming from one person. It was very sad and tragic about the death of this young person and it was very wrong. But let's not judge the whole thing without all the facts."

"My daughter found a decorative flag lying in the road in Greenberry Hills. If the person who lost this flag can identify it, they can have it back. They can call Mail Call and leave their number and I will be glad to return it."

"To the person who is interested in the birdhouses on Sharpsburg Pike, that would be Mr. Merle Hoffman. His number is in the Washington County phone book."

"I think it would be great to have another Wal-Mart. For instance, if you wanted to buy an outfit of clothes and they have one piece in your size, but not the other piece, you have to go to Frederick to the other Wal-Mart to find the other piece in your size. But now you would be able to go to the other Wal-Mart in Hagerstown. I think it is great and I realize that there are going to be some changes, but you need to stop griping, moaning and groaning and complaining and thank God that we are having new jobs coming to this area. No matter what they do to improve this town, there is always someone complaining."

"I went to Washington County Tourism (but) it was closed on Saturday and Sunday. Tourists like to travel on Saturday and Sundays also, so you would think that they would be open."

"'Stadium in jeopardy.' Best news I have ever heard in a long time."

"There will be a revolution and it surely will happen. When a designated state secedes from the union, there will be others. In time, Alaska will secede from the union of United States. South Carolina may be the first, then North Carolina and then it will extend South and include Florida. All coastal states will secede and join in the effort of independence."
