Mail Call for 3/6

March 06, 2000

Editor's note - Please be as brief as possible when calling Mail Call, The Daily Mail's reader call-in line.

Mail Call is not staffed on weekends or holidays so it is best to call Mail Call during the week. The Mail Call number is 301-791-6236.

You are welcome to leave a recorded message on any subject, but some calls will be screened out.

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"What good is the 800 number to find out about your child support if it is always temporarily out of service all the time? I have been trying for the past two weeks and it is always out of service. It is no use to call your worker, because they always say they don't know if any child support payments have been made or not. Now if we are late with a child support payment, then we will be in court. You need to get that system straightened out. You can't find out how much you owe and you can't see if the payment went through. This is why people are being deadbeat parents. Maybe it isn't their fault. If you pay like me, or are waiting to receive a payment, we can't get anything because we don't know what is going on."

"To the man who wants to get AT&T off his phone bill. I have done the same thing. I spent three hours on the phone getting the run around from Bell Atlantic and AT&T. Finally, I talked to a man from Bell Atlantic and he told me to call AT&T and I said no. I am staying on this line until I talk to someone. Finally, after an hour wait, I got it taken off. But, it will cost you $5 to take it off and a $1.05 every month after that. I don't know what the $1.05 is for, but I got the big one taken off. Good luck."

"A friend told me to look for the billboard signs along the road sides that have messages on them from God. They are great. I want to thank the people who put them up. I saw one yesterday, it said, 'That, Love Your Neighbor Thing. That still goes. Signed, God.'"

"We got our phone bill and there was one long distance call on there and it was only for a minute and they charged 26 cents. We then switched to MCI and they only charge seven cents a minute and only a few dollars a month. So people, switch over to MCI. They are great."

"While lying in my bed Sunday night, restless, tossing and turning, I decided to turn on WWMD. Such beautiful music coming from there. Great music coming from the '40s and '50s. I heard Patty Page, Doris Day, Vaughn Monroe, all the oldies and the D.J. with the deep voice. It was so relaxing and I don't even remember what time I dozed off. So beautiful. I wish I would have stayed awake. It brought back the sweetest memories. It helped me to fall asleep."

"I was born and raised in Hagerstown. I sure pity the two or three blocks of East Franklin Street. They have taken a beating for the past couple of years with construction. You think they would sooner or later get done, don't you? Franklin Street has been nothing but construction for the past three or four years, check it out. Terrible, just terrible."

"I have a complaint for the West Franklin Street Post Office. The guy that answers the phone who gives zip codes is very impolite. I heard him mumbling to the guy in the background, just because I didn't have the address, he couldn't look up the zip code. "

"I want to thank the truck driver on Indiana Avenue that hit my truck this morning and drove off onto Indiana Avenue and you didn't even have the courtesy to stop and leave your name. It is people like you that make me use my insurance company and money out of my pocket. I hope everybody isn't like that in America."

"Hey Hagerstown, I took my cat to the vet today and they put him on Prozac."

"Whatever made our city fathers think that the people in the East End of town need another super Wal-Mart. Have they gone mad? Have they ever tried to fight the traffic at the intersection of Dual Highway and Edgewood Drive? I think not or they wouldn't even consider a second Wal-Mart. Five miles from the new one on I-81? Try getting in and out of Home Federal or Hagerstown Trust banks. It is almost impossible. Our countryside has already been spoiled by over developing in this area. Use some common sense and stop the plans to build a second store. Residents of Funkstown, Edgewood Hills, Brightwood Acres and Langly Drive, ban together and bombard City Hall with your protests. Call 301-739-8577 ext. 141 and ask to speak with Ric Kautz. Let's protect our property."

"I want to know why the South End's mail is being delivered so late at night? Sometimes it is 5:30 in the evening before we get our mail. Are other people having trouble? What is the matter with that mail department down there?"

"In regards to the 6-year-old boy who is accused of shooting the little girl in Michigan. The press release that hit The Herald-Mail called the boy a victim. That boy is not the victim. He is the product and the little girl is the victim. This goes to show how sloppily we are using language."
