Bowers roast preview

Former Washington County Commissioner Ronald L. Bowers will be the target of a "roast" at a Hagerstown Community College fund-raising event.

The roast at 6 p.m. Friday, March 17, will raise money for the college athletic scholarship endowment fund. The event will be held at the Four Points Hotel on Dual Highway in Hagerstown.

Bowers said Thursday he is glad to help the fund with what he predicts will be a "bittersweet experience."

"It is worth it," he said.

"It gives people a chance to cut me up," Bowers said. They can rib him about everything from his high school days to county government issues, he said. But they should remember that he gets to make remarks in response at the end of the night, he said.

The "roast master" for the event is Bob Borngesser, former WHAG-TV news anchor.

Other celebrity roasters include B. Marie Byers, Washington County School Board member; Pat Cushwa, former state senator and current chairwoman of the Maryland Parole Commission; and former County Commissioners James Wade and Richard Roulette.

Bowers was a logical choice for the first roast because he was instrumental in getting funding for the college athletic center, HCC Athletic Director Jim Brown said.

"Without Bowers this ARCC would never have been here," Brown said.

Organizers expect a crowd of about 300, Brown said.

Tickets are $250 for two people, he said

To buy a roast ticket, call Brown at 790-2800 ext. 289.
