Mail Call for 3/1

March 01, 2000

Editor's note - Please be as brief as possible when calling Mail Call, The Daily Mail's reader call-in line.

Mail Call is not staffed on weekends or holidays so it is best to call Mail Call during the week. The Mail Call number is 301-791-6236.

You are welcome to leave a recorded message on any subject, but some calls will be screened out.

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"I agree with the person who called in about the stabbing at the bowling alley. I think it is pathetic that someone can be charged with stabbing someone and be out roaming around. I think our city needs to think more about the safety of everyone in the community instead of worrying about how much money they can get."

"I wanted to say hello to 'Tiger.' This is 'Teddy Bear.' I love my 'Tiger' very much."

"Gordon Moats did not deserve this. While his family is suffering the loss of their only son, the man charged in the stabbing walks the streets. What is wrong with this justice system? This is not right."

"I have noticed many requests in Mail Call to cancel April 20 of the spring break holiday. I don't think that is a very good idea. Don't you remember what happened last April 20 in Littleton, Col.?"

"It seems to me that when you do hear anything about Larry Vaughn, he is always in some kind of fight. It is time that he gave up thinking about running for councilman. Give it up, Larry."

"I just got my gas bill and the total bill for the month is $125.09. Examining it, the actual gas cost that I used at my home was $72.05. There is a base charge of $43.79. When I called to find out what that is for, they told me that it was for the commission on utility services, for advertising, non-payment of bills and uncollected bills. I called the Maryland Public Commission to find out who approves this. I will give you the number if you have the same questions I do. Tt is 1-800-492-0474. This is outrageous, especially for senior citizens. If you multiply that from the thousands of customers in Washington County, you can understand some commission has left us open and senior citizens cannot afford it."

"I am 70 now and when I was a kid, Children's Day was in June and we celebrated it in church. Each child got a little potted plant and we sang hymns."

"I am 10 years old and I think that there should be prayer and Bible time in school, it would help. The Power Team should have gone to all schools."

"I am a citizen in the West End and as far as I am concerned Larry Vaughn and Joe Imes were only trying to help out the residents up here and were only concerned about our safety. All Mr. McClure was thinking about was more parking spaces. McClure, stay over where you belong, we don't want you here. Thanks again, Larry and Joe, for all your troubles."

"It is no wonder the city cannot make up their minds about the stadium, when they have a city councilman and a former city councilman acting like two grade school children. Hagerstown will never advance to more than a backwards small town, regardless of its size. As for the stadium, why should we build something that would benefit the city and the county. It is not like Hagerstown at all to do something like that."

"I just wanted to say 'thank you' to the gentleman who works at the Western Maryland Hospital Center who helped my two sons when they got a flat tire Monday night. He provided them with a jack and kept his headlights on so they could change the tire. Thanks again."

"Someone enlighten me. I am having a tough time trying to understand something. The police pose as drug dealers and use unmarked cars to catch people dealing drugs. I am all for it but when I asked someone why the police don't use unmarked cars to nab speeders here on Oak Hill, Hamilton and Potomac Avenue, I am told that this would be entrapment. Well I guess I must be dumber than a post. That doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me, anyone can see that black and white car sticking out a mile coming down any one of these streets. Please enlighten me."

"Thanks to WWMD for the good music you play on Sunday evenings, from 5 p.m. and on. Thanks from a lot of senior citizens."

"I am trying to get the long distance charge off of my AT&T bill, that I didn't ask for in the first place. I am getting the run- around. AT&T told me I had to notify Bell Atlantic and the girl at Bell Atlantic told me I had to notify AT&T. I have been trying for three months now. Please help."

"I used to make chocolate caramel bars. I got the recipe off the back of Kraft Caramels. It came in a yellow package. Towards Christmas I decided to make more of them. But I couldn't find them anyplace. Can anyone tell me if they still sell the Kraft Caramels?"

"To the person who is looking for the people for the reunion. I know Eddie Grove, he is my brother-in-law, my husband's brother. If you want more information about him, you can call me at 301-582-0305."

"I think the public has a right to see pictures of the two men that were charged in the stabbings at the bowling alley. Our children should be able to see who these men are so they can stay away from them."

"This is Jeff Pebble in regards to the person looking for people for a reunion. I really don't want to put my information in the paper. However, you can leave your information in Mail Call and I will get in touch with you."
