Mail Call for 2/24

February 24, 2000

Editor's note - Please be as brief as possible when calling Mail Call, The Daily Mail's reader call-in line.

Mail Call is not staffed on weekends or holidays so it is best to call Mail Call during the week. The Mail Call number is 301-791-6236.

You are welcome to leave a recorded message on any subject, but some calls will be screened out.

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"For Michael Brown, the one whose name was in the paper for doing the right thing at school, by turning money in. They should have put your picture in the paper. It was nice of the vice principal at Western Heights Middle School to give you an award and have you tell the class why you did it. At least you have something to be proud of. Your mother, your step-father and you should be proud of what you did. You should pat yourself on the back and be very happy."

"These people that are putting anniversaries and birthdays in Mail Call. All you have to do is send in their name, birthdate, and how old they are going to be. Then that way it won't have to take up room in Mail Call. They will put in free of charge on the front page. Fax it or mail it two weeks before, then it will be there on the front page and not in the middle of the paper."

"Someone asked why the Power Team Crusade was allowed in public schools. Well, most of the public wants them in there. We are getting tired of a few of you whining about anything that has to do with Christianity. If you don't like it, move to another country."

"About the person who put in the paper about the Power Team Crusade. They didn't go in there with any Christianity on. They went in there to teach them right from wrong. There is nothing that showed they were Christians."

"I think the person who put in the paper about the Power Team should go see them. You would understand that they were there for amusement only. They were not allowed to wear any religious T-shirts or preach any type of religion. I don't see any harm in letting these children see the power that they do have. If the schools would allow the religion back in, then maybe we wouldn't have the problems that we do now. I am not forcing religion on anyone and neither is the schools. I think it should be voluntary and it should have never been taken out of the schools. When these people entered, they were told that they weren't allowed to preach. If they had the word God on their shirts they were made to turn them inside out. So go see them the next time before making your decision about them."

"To the individual who said about the Power Team being in the schools. If you are so worried about a little bit of religion in the schools, keep your kid at home and home-school them."

"I see that Mayor Bruchey was at the opening of the Texas Roadhouse Restaurant. We missed him at the gala for the Community Free Clinic. He would have heard about the uninsured and how they are being served. His priorities need some work."

"Is there a support group for parents who have had a child molested? Is there a support group for the children who have been molested?"

"I would just like to say 'good luck' to all the Washington County athletes on teams and individually who will be competing for region and state titles in the next few weeks in high school basketball and wrestling. There are some very fine athletes in this county and they have worked hard all season to reach their goals. It would be nice to see one of the teams or individuals win a state title."

"In response to the person who is having problems understanding the Bible. God has revealed unto us, His word, and His word has nothing to do with the killings that are going on. It is totally apparent that you have no knowledge or understanding of the Bible. One of the Ten Commandments that God gave to Moses was 'Thou shalt not kill.' Moses was not responsible for any killings. Jesus certainly didn't threaten destruction on anyone. He came to save, not to destroy. He came to earth, suffered and died on the cross for our sins, so that we could have life and have it more abundantly."

"To the School Board. Please take away April 20 and April 25 as holidays for the kids so that they don't have to go as long in June."

"To the guy who helped my sister up when she fell in the snowstorm about two weeks ago. She found out the other day that she is pregnant and if it is a boy she would like to name it Richard. If it is OK with you. Call into Mail Call and let us know. Thank you Richard. Get back to us as soon as you can."

"Can someone tell me where I can get Domino Sugar Cubes. I have been to four different grocery stores in the Hagerstown area and nobody seems to be carrying sugar cubes. Is it against the law or what? Diabetes runs in my family and I drink a lot of strong coffee and I find that sugar cubes is a very convenient way to limit my sugar intake. Please help, thank you."
