Washington County briefs

Potential home buyers in Washington County may be eligible for 7.25 percent mortgage money under a state program, Washington County Community Development Coordinator Joseph Kuhna said in a news release Wednesday.

While 7.25 percent will be the starting rate for the Maryland Mortgage Program's mortgages, the rate will change periodically to reflect market conditions, he said.

Local governments take advantage of the low interest rates on bonds financed by the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development's (DHCD) Community Development Administration, and save money because the state administers the program, he said.

Potential home buyers can get the loans through a network of local lenders but buyers must meet certain income restrictions and acquisition costs of the houses are limited, he said.

In Washington County, the income limits are $64,300 for a two-member family, and $73,945 for three or more, he said.

The maximum sales price for a home is $126,300.

For information on the loans, call Kuhna at 301-791-3065, or Fran Counihan or Ed McDonough at DHCD at 1-800-756-0119.

Washington County government is looking for volunteers to serve on boards and commissions, County Clerk Joni Bittner said in a news release Wednesday.

Most of the 30 county boards and commissioners rely on volunteers, but some offer compensation. Terms usually run three years, with a one-term renewal option.

There is a vacancy on the Rehabilitation Loan Committee, which reviews applications for low-interest loans offered through the Department of Planning and Community Development. The loans are available for home repairs and are made on the basis of income or disability.

PenMar Development Corp., which oversees the re-use of Fort Ritchie, is looking for a volunteer to serve on its board.

Successful applicants should have general or specific knowledge of the area served by the specific board or commission, Bittner said.

An application form and complete list of boards, commissions and committees is available by calling Bittner at 301-791-3090, or by visiting the Washington County Internet page at //

Completed forms may be returned to Bittner at 100 W. Washington St., Hagerstown, MD 21740.
