HCC blows by first-round foe

February 17, 2000|By BOB PARASILITI

In Corey Tabron's profession, a straight line is the quickest but it isn't the best way between two points.

When you make a living as a jump shooter, anything shot on a string usually comes back quicker than it left.

Tabron followed a more arching, looping route to the bucket to score 30 points Thursday, on 11 of 19 shots - including a long overdue 8 of 13 from 3-point range - to lead Hagerstown Community College to a 91-57 rout of Harford in the first round of the Maryland Junior College Conference tournament at the HCC athletic complex.

"I found (my range) quick," Tabron said. "I've been putting more arc on the ball. Once you get in the groove, it's tough to get out. I'm back to my usual self."

Tabron's shooting made Thursday's opener even less of a game than it looked. Harford dressed only five players, making the Fighting Owls bench only slightly more empty than the stands surrounding the playing floor.

The freshman hit seven of his 3s in the first half, including a run when he scored 13 points in a 15-0 spurt that lasted 2 minutes, 45 seconds and put HCC in command with a 23-6 lead.

After that, HCC pretty much spent the rest of the night padding statistics and resting up for tonight's 6 p.m. quarterfinal game with Cecil.

"We were fortunate to pull away quickly," HCC coach Jim Brown said. "It wasn't so much that they were undermanned as we just shot the ball so well. Corey went out and had a career game."

HCC steadily built a 47-point lead in the first half, largely on Tabron's 25-point effort along with 15 each by Brian Williams and David Covington. The Hawks settled for the 46-point advantage at the half.

The Hawks became disinterested in the second half, playing more for show as the game was well in hand. HCC led 76-35 when Brown emptied the bench with 13:20 remaining.

"This was just a good warmup for (today)," Brown said. "Corey should take some confidence with him after tonight."
