Crumbs from the Cracker Barrel

February 16, 2000

While visiting her grandparents, Thomas Francis and Susan Donegan at Pearre west of Hancock during the C&O Canal era, Mary Donegan Howe notes, "We would bum a ride on a canal boat. The families that were on them were very happy to have us aboard. We would ride a few miles, and the captain would stop the mules, and he would help us off. We would then walk back the towpath to the lock and hang around the store (Pearre)."
