Restaurant serves shelter residents

As the owner of The Steakout Restaurant, David Jones prepares food for his patrons.

For the past two Tuesday nights, Jones has served dinner to a different clientele, the "residents" of Hagerstown's Cold Weather Shelter.

"The first night, there were about 50-55 people to feed and they really enjoyed it," Jones said as he was preparing his second weekly offering.

The menu the first week was fried chicken and all the trimmings, including dessert.

"We're serving fried chicken again ... at their request," Jones said.

Jones opened his new restaurant in November, serving lunch and dinner at 12 E. Washington St., the site of the old Dutch Kitchen.

Jones said he credits a lot of people with helping him succeed and decided to do the same for others.

Jones heard of the needs of the shelter and offered to lend a hand, to the delight of Terri Baker, director of the REACH Cold Weather Shelter at 148 W. Franklin St.

"Steakout is providing dinner every Tuesday night until April 18 when the shelter closes for the season," Baker said. "Jones is serving a hot meal with a smile and a heart full of compassion."

She and Jones have challenged other restaurants to do the same to help those who use the services of the shelter.

"I try every day to walk around downtown and I see dirt and trash and people looking in garbage cans for food," Jones said. "That shouldn't happen in today's society."

Lending a hand at the cold weather shelter is Jones' effort at combating that and a way of giving back, he said.

Jones and two of his employees cook and serve the food at the shelter.

Baker said the shelter also is in need of groups willing to donate bag lunches for a day or a week at a time.

Monetary donations are used to buy fuel oil and pay for other operational expenses. Donations of dry food, paper goods, long underwear, work gloves, toiletries, and the like are also appreciated.
