School budget hearing is tonight

February 07, 2000

The Washington County Board of Education will hold a public hearing tonight on its $119-million budget proposal.

The School Board adopted Schools Superintendent Herman G. Bartlett Jr.'s spending plan by a 4-1 vote last week. It may make changes to the budget based on public comments before presenting it to the Washington County Commissioners Feb. 28.

The board commissioned a telephone survey for the first time this year to invite anonymous response. According to Community Relations Specialist Donna Messina, nearly 2,000 residents participated, based on preliminary data.

Results of the survey will be available at the hearing. The board will hold a budget work session afterward.

Anyone wishing to speak should contact the superintendent's office ahead of time at 301-766-2816 or sign up 30 minutes before the meeting begins at 7 p.m. People representing organizations will be allotted five minutes to speak; individuals get three minutes.
