Fire destroys Charles Town home

February 05, 2000

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Fire destroyed a single-story house near here late Friday, Independent Fire Company Chief Ed Smith said Saturday.

The cause of the fire at 124 Manchester Drive is still under investigation, but Smith said firefighters suspect it was electrical in nature.

No injuries were reported.

Smith said one woman and at least one child were living in the house. He said the woman had insurance.

Firefighters were called to the property at about 11:45 p.m. Friday, Smith said.

He said snow had been piled up in front of the fire hydrants and the firefighters had to dig them out.

Smith said the inconvenience didn't affect their ability to fight this fire, but that it could be the difference between life and death in future fires.

"People should shovel those hydrants out," he said.
