Gaels finally get OT

Lauren Costello was in the right place at the right time Thursday night - many, many times over.

The 5-foot-11 junior had 30 points, 15 rebounds and four steals as St. Maria Goretti rallied to force overtime, then pulled away in the extra frame for a 52-48 victory over No. 5 Broadfording.

"Lauren Costello hurt us inside," Broadfording coach Dana Gonzales said. "She had 30 points in the paint because she fought hard down there."

St. Maria Goretti coach John Ridge was pleased with Costello's performance.

"Lauren Costello had a great game," Ridge said. "She seems to improve with every game. I just think that she is real smart with the basketball."

The Gaels (14-8) outscored the Lions (19-2) by a 7-3 margin during the overtime period to seal the victory. Costello pulled down six of her 15 rebounds during the overtime period. Costello also made the first basket of the overtime period to give the Gaels the lead for good.

Freshman point guard Kelly Wills helped St. Maria Goretti keep its lead in overtime by making three of her four foul shots.

"I don't think that I have ever been so happy in my life," Costello said. "It was so nerve-wracking. I just wanted to rise to the occasion, because of my mistakes in last night's overtime loss (57-48) to Jefferson."

Sophomore Brett Stone added 10 points, nine rebounds and five assists for St. Maria Goretti. Andrea Benavides had six steals and five assists for the Gaels, who won despite getting no points from leading scorer Heidi Siirtola.

B'nai Holt collected 19 points, 10 rebounds, nine assists and five steals for Broadfording. Tiffany Tucker added 19 points and 11 rebounds, while Ashley Mason also grabbed 11 rebounds. Senior Vennece Fowlkes, the team's second-leading scorer and rebounder, missed the game with a badly sprained ankle.

The Lions took a 45-42 lead with 52 seconds left in regulation on a 3-pointer by freshman Jessica Biddle. But the Gaels tied the score when Costello got a basket off of an offensive rebound and Stone made one of her two foul shots to send the game into overtime.
