Water mains repaired

January 29, 2000

Working into the wee hours of Saturday morning, crews with the Hagerstown Water Department repaired two water main breaks, restoring service to customers in the North End.

"Everything is back in good working order," said Hagerstown Water Chief Gene Walzl at midday Saturday.

The first main broke around 5 p.m. on Northern Avenue at the entrance to the Morris Frock American Legion Post.

An hour later, another main ruptured on Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the Coffman Health Center.

The shift in temperatures to below freezing caused the old pipes to burst, said Mike Buhrman with the water department. The pipes in those areas date to the 1960s and 1970s.
