More restaurants, stores planned for Centre at Hagerstown

A string of restaurants and several stores have been added to plans for the Centre at Hagerstown, which is under construction northwest of the Interstate 81-U.S. 40 interchange in Hagerstown.

Pizzeria Uno, T.G.I. Friday's, International House of Pancakes, Trak Auto, Mattress Discounters and Payless Shoe Source are among the eateries and stores expected to open at the center, John Van Hoven, director of leasing for Virginia-based development firm Petrie Dierman Kughn, said Thursday.

The grand opening for the 675,000-square-foot shopping center is scheduled for May 11. Some stores may open a little earlier and some later.

Several stores including a Wal-Mart Super Center, Circuit City and Bed, Bath & Beyond, probably will open in June, Van Hoven said.


An official groundbreaking was held in April. The center will be anchored by a Wal-Mart that will cover about 5 acres and a Home Depot about half that size.

Van Hoven said since the groundbreaking stores and restaurants that have or are about to finalize leases for space at the shopping center include Dollar Express, Dress Barn, Famous Footwear, Hallmark Card and Gift, a nail salon, Arby's, Wendy's, KFC, McDonald's and Ryan's Steakhouse.

Site plans and building permits have been approved for most of the buildings at the center.

The Hagerstown Planning Commission approved site plans for Wendy's and T.G.I. Friday's on Wednesday evening.

Building permits have been issued for most of the stores that will occupy the roughly half-mile strip of retail. Pizzeria Uno is the only restaurant with a building permit. The restaurants are to be across a parking lot from the stores.

According to estimates included on building permits, almost $24 million in construction at the shopping center has been approved. That figure includes $6 million for the Wal-Mart store and almost $3.8 million for the Home Depot.

Plans for the Centre at Hagerstown were announced in November 1996, and construction began last February.

The shopping center is expected to employ about 1,500 full- and part-time workers, according to developers.
