Martinsburg company to hire 100 new workers

January 25, 2000|By JULIE E. GREENE

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Quad/Graphics will hire approximately 100 new workers to operate printing equipment to be installed in its newly completed $11 million addition, the plant manager said Tuesday.

That will bring the printing firm's local work force up to about 840 workers by this summer, including the 40 employees at Quad/Graphics' neighboring Parcel/Direct parcel sorting plant, said Plant Manager Mike Popp.

No other expansions are planned for the next six months, however the firm's 10-year master plan calls for having 1,500 to 2,000 employees by 2007, Popp said.

The firm is hiring and has been continuously hiring since the printing plant opened in 1997 because of constant growth, Popp said.

Entry level workers usually make $7.50 an hour, but that is flexible, Popp said. The plant operates seven days a week, 24 hours a day with 12-hour shifts, he said.

The printing plant prints catalogs and retail inserts for companies such as Victoria's Secret, Norm Thompson Outfitters, Free Port Studios and Kmart. The company's headquarters is west of Milwaukee in Pewaukee, Wis.

The 280,000-square-foot addition to the printing plant at 855 Caperton Blvd. in the Cumbo Yard Industrial Park off W.Va. 9 was completed around Jan. 1 after construction began last August, Popp said.

The firm invested $30 million in two printing presses and $5 million for two stitchers for the addition, he said.

The first of two gravure printing presses is expected to begin production by May 15 with the second following by June 15, Popp said. Gravure presses are 108 inches wide and produce 120 pages with every cylinder revolution.

The two stitchers are expected to be ready by May, he said.

The addition will eventually house a VNA or Very Narrow Aisle storage system for works in progress, but that may not be installed this year, Popp said.

The storage system will allow the firm to save a lot of floor space because it stores 6,000 pallets vertically, he said.
