Glen W. Ashton

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Glen Wade Ashton, 48, of Martinsburg, died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000, at Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

Born March 11, 1951, in California, he was the son of Marie McGowan of Lockport, N.Y. and the late Fred G. Ashton.

He was a mold repairman and welder for Corning Consumer Products Company.

He attended St. John's Lutheran Church.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 23 years, Dona Smallwood Ashton of Martinsburg; his stepfather, Jesse McGowan of Lockport; two daughters, Kori S. Ashton at home and Andrea Lewis of Martinsburg; a son, Bryon G. Ashton of Inwood, W.Va.; a brother, Billy Ashton of Barboursville, W.Va.; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his stepmother, Josephine Ashton, and a brother, James Ashton.

A memorial service will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Rosedale Funeral Chapel, 2060 Rosedale Road in Martinsburg. The Rev. James Riley will officiate.

A private family inurnment will be held at a later date.

The family will receive friends today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Berkeley County Humane Society of West Virginia, 1531 Charles Town Road, Martinsburg, WV 25401.

Caitlin M. Seville

Caitlin Marie Seville, infant, of Maugansville, died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000. Arrangements are by Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown.

Bernard E. Gifft

BAKERTON, W.Va., - Bernard Eugene Gifft, 60, of Bakerton, who died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, is survived by one daughter, Becky Wallechi of Clear Spring; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Max L. Powell

Max Leroy Powell, 74, of Meadow Wood Drive, Hagerstown, died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000, at Washington County Hospital.

Born July 2, 1925, in Cherry Run, W.Va., he was the son of the late Russell Franklin and Goldie May Mullen Powell.

He was a pipefitter with Western Maryland Railroad for 44 years before retiring in 1983.

He was a veteran of U.S. Navy, serving during World War II.

He was a member of Morris Frock Post 42 American Legion, Amvets Post 10, Hagerstown VFW, Funkstown Moose, Williamsport Redmen's Club and Eagles Inc. of Waynesboro, Pa.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Rhoda F. Powell; a son, Max Larry Powell of Williamsport; a stepdaughter, Mary Jean Betts of Greencastle, Pa.; a stepson, Charles Hadley of Marlowe, W.Va.; two grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Oda Harbaugh.

Services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown. The Rev. Thomas Perry will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Effie M. Socks

Effie Mae Socks, 82, of 210 Devonshire Road, Hagerstown, died Friday, Jan. 21, 2000, at Washington County Hospital.

Born May 30, 1917, in Washington County, she was the daughter of the late David Albert and Lydia Grace Curfman Gossard.

She retired from the Washington County Department of Social Services.

She was a member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church, and was a Sunday school teacher.

She was a former Girl Scout leader.

She is survived by seven daughters, Nancy Jean Langenstein of Summerville, S.C., Connie Perry of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., Clara Ann Buchanon of Greencastle, Pa., Shirley Stephens and Sharon Shrock, both of Hagerstown, Glenda McLucas of Myersville, Md., and Alice Gettel of Falling Waters, W.Va.; three sons, Robert Socks and David Socks, both of Hagerstown, and Donald Socks of Clear Spring; three sisters, Edith Gaylor, Mary Ruth Craig and Freda Wempe, all of Hagerstown; two brothers, Charles Gossard of Hagerstown and Evers Gossard of Salisbury, Md.; 30 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Ethel Bowman, Alice Lumm and Nancy Slifer; and four brothers, Joseph Gossard, Albert Gossard, Robert Gossard and William Gossard.

Services will be Monday at 9:30 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Dennis L. Upton will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to Emmanuel United Methodist Church, 802 Summit Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21740.

Mary E. Kesecker

RANSON, W.Va. - Mary Ellen Kesecker, 56, of Ranson, died Friday, Jan. 21, 2000, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital in Ranson.

Born May 17, 1943, in Berkeley County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Alvey W. and Ruth Myrtle Brown Plotner Sr.

She was a member of Church of God.

She was a member of Chapter 738 Women of the Moose.
