Mail Call for 1/17

January 17, 2000

Editor's note - Please be as brief as possible when calling Mail Call, The Daily Mail's reader call-in line.

Mail Call is not staffed on weekends or holidays so it is best to call Mail Call during the week. The Mail Call number is 301-791-6236.

You are welcome to leave a recorded message on any subject, but some calls will be screened out.

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"I am calling about the bridge that is closed in Boonsboro. That bridge needs to be reopened. The three minutes that the firefighters lost for that house could have been three lives. The County Commissioners need to think. You are supposed to be there to help save lives. The next fire or something down there could take someone's life."

"Someone wanted to know when they are going to issue new license plates. If your plates are bad, all you have to do is ask for new ones by asking for them. If they are still good, you don't need new ones. The enamel was cracked on mine so I asked for new ones. I got them in the mail in just a few days. Then all you have to do is return the old ones to the DMV. Simple as that."

"I want to know if anyone can explain to me why about once every three months the phone bills are so high? My wife and I sat and tried to figure it out and we tried to call the number on there and all you get is a bunch of recordings. Heck they can't tell you anything. So please explain this to me."

"This is a thank you to Lisa and Medina, two angels of mercy, that gave love, kindness and care to my wonderful stepfather, their grandfather, Maurice Wollard, during his long battle with Alzheimer's. God will surely bless you, Marlena."

"To the person who called in about the spring water on Md. 491. Just because the health department decided that water wasn't good enough for us, doesn't mean that we have to stop drinking it. They just don't endorse it. The water has been there for many years, people have been drinking it for many years and they are still alive. So we are going to continue to drink it until they shut it down, which they cannot do. So if you want to keep getting your water there, I would continue to do it."

"For the people receiving the porno information from the Internet. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it has nothing to do with the Y2K bug. You are getting it because someone in your home is visiting porno sites. Once you visit a site, you start getting various junk mail from many other sites."

"What a dumb idea to get rid of the taxi stands. This is from a person who passes through every Saturday night off the bus. The idea of moving it to the East Washington Street parking lot is as nutty as can be. I am not about to go down there and stand on Saturday night in that parking lot. I can just imagine what it is going to be like for the college students. That is about all I have to say because it doesn't matter what we say. The politicians will do what they want to do anyway."

"Now that Hagerstown has installed mostly all of the new traffic lights, wouldn't it be nice if they were synchronized like before?"

"In response to someone wanting to know where you can get water and fill your own jugs. If you go to County Market, you can get bottles of spring water for less than 50 cents. You get refills you can get them for less than 29 cents. This machine is located in the back near the meat section."

"There is a bird house sitting on the porch of a house on Beaver Creek Road. I understand that it was made by someone in or around the Clear Spring area. If anyone knows the phone number or the person who made that, contact me at 301-766-4571. Would the lady who had the stand at junior college, at the craft show, that makes large bird houses, that she sold to Sandy, call the same number please."

"I am calling about the black crows that are flying around up in the West End near Western Heights Middle School. I wish you would do something about them, they are really messing up Salem Avenue Highway, all the people's houses, up around the school. The kids can't even come out and play. Now the neighbors are getting their guns out and starting to shoot at them and that is getting dangerous. You move them from one end to the other. Something should be done about it now!"

"I wanted to say that I enjoyed reading that story about Rocky the cat. I am glad that he was found, rescued and returned to his owner. It is very inspirational and heartwarming to read. I am a cat owner myself and I like reading those kind of stories. I wish him and his owner the best of luck."

"For all the people complaining about the traffic patterns at the mall. There wouldn't be a problem if everyone would just read the signs. It tells you exactly what you have to do. All you have to do is read."

"I want to wish everyone a good and happy new year 2000 and hope that everyone gets along with each other."
