D.C. man dies in crash on I-270

FREDERICK, Md. - A passenger in a vehicle involved in an accident on southbound Interstate 270 died Monday afternoon, according to Maryland State Police in Frederick.

Police said a 38-year-old Saul Cardenas-Sorto, of Washington, D.C., was driving a 1992 Suzuki Sidekick south on I-270 when he changed lanes at 3:15 p.m.

His vehicle struck the front bumper of a 1992 Isuzu Rodeo driven by Gloria Jean Mathews, 49, of Gaithersburg, Md., police said.

Cardenas-Sorto's vehicle entered the median, started to overturn and crossed the northbound lanes, coming to rest on the right shoulder of the northbound lanes, police said.

His passenger, Oscar Armando Osorio Figuero, 39, of Washington, was taken to Shady Grove Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Cardenas-Sorto was taken to Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, Md., and is in stable condition, a spokeswoman said.

A 1997 Chevrolet van driven by Victor Wyant of Boonsboro, Md., was traveling in the northbound lane of I-270 and was struck by a tire that came off the Sidekick, police said.
