New Year's Eve water usage high

January 13, 2000

On New Year's Eve Hagerstown Water Department customers used about 1 million more gallons of water than is typical, City Water Department Engineer Dave Shindle said Thursday.

Water Department Manager Gene Walzl said personnel have no way of knowing why usage was up that night.

"Maybe the holiday or Y2K brought on the higher usage," Walzl said.

Walzl said usage was highest between 6 p.m. and midnight, when at times water consumption was 50 percent higher than normal.

City water customers, which include the prison complex south of Hagerstown and businesses and residents in parts of Smithsburg, Williamsport and Funkstown, used about 10.22 million gallons of water on Dec. 31, 1999.

Shindle said on a typical winter day, usage is about 9.2 million gallons.
