CLEAR SPRING - Anthony Basile picked the perfect time to come out of his shooting slump.

Basile scored eight straight points in the third quarter Tuesday night to help the Smithsburg boys basketball team blow open a close game and take a 59-36 victory over Clear Spring.

"Anthony Basile was in a slump and I told him at halftime to shoot his way out of it," Smithsburg coach Dave Morris said.

Smithsburg (4-7) led Clear Spring (1-10) 32-23 with five minutes remaining in the third quarter.

The Leopards' 12-2 run over the next three minutes increased their advantage to 44-25. Basile made a basket and then canned a pair of 3-pointers for his eight points. Smithsburg led by at least 15 points for the rest of the game.

"We got more shots in the second half. I just told them to play them straight up and only give them one shot," Morris said. "We are still not playing on the level that we need to be on to win in the MVAL. But you never spit on a victory."

Chip Kershner, the Leopards' 6-foot-5 center, led Smithsburg with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Basile scored 15 points. Jeremy Schnebly came off of the bench to lead Clear Spring with nine points.
