York Refrigeration Waynesboro lays off 53

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - York Regrigeration Waynesboro announced the layoffs of 53 workers Thursday but said they may be recalled if slumping business picks back up.

No further layoffs are expected, said a local company official who asked not to be identified.

All of those given pink slips are represented by Local 1296 of the United Auto Workers.

Steve Graham, spokesman for York International in York, Pa., the company's headquarters, could not be reached for comment.

The plant at 10 Cumberland Valley Ave., formerly known as the Frick Co., manufactures screw compressors for use in the food and beverage industries. The company is also finding a growing market for its screw compressors in the natural gas recovery industry.

Another 100 work in a plant in San Antonio, Texas.

Worldwide York International is a $4.2 billion company with more than 25,000 workers and is a leader in the manufacture of heating, ventilating and refrigeration equipment.

The company donated the machinery that freezes the surface at the Doris I. Billow Ice Arena in Zullinger, Pa.
