Oregon woman charged after two-state chase

Maryland State Police joined a chase late Monday with Greencastle Police and helped stop an Oregon woman with numerous weapons in her vehicle.

Deanne Alice Wojciechowski, 28, of Albany, Oregon, has been charged with possession of a handgun and other concealed weapons, plus numerous traffic offenses, police said.

This morning, she was at the Washington County Detention Center awaiting an appearance before a bond commissioner.

Monday night, local troopers met at the Pennsylvania line at 11:05 p.m. as the Pennsylvania officers chased a 1990 Chevrolet Camaro into the state on southbound Interstate 81, police said.


The chase continued until stop sticks brought the Camaro to a stop at the Md. 68 ramp, police said.

A search of the vehicle revealed a loaded semi-automatic handgun and several other dangerous weapons, police said.


Car rear-ends tractor on Md. 57

CLEAR SPRING - A Washington County juvenile was cited after his car rear-ended a tractor towing a manure spreader on Md. 57 north of Broadfording Road on Monday evening, Maryland State Police said.

Police said the juvenile was driving south on Md. 57 when he hit the vehicle that was turning right into a driveway at 6 p.m.

The driver of the tractor, Maurice E. Trumpower, 58, of the 13600 block of St. Paul Road, was uninjured, police said.

Ryan E. Blair, 17, of the 14600 block of St. Paul Road, was taken to the Washington County Hospital where he was treated and later released.

Blair was cited with failure to reduce speed to avoid a collision.


Cruiser damaged after striking deer

A Washington County Sheriff's Department cruiser was heavily damaged when a deputy hit a deer on Md. 65 near the Washington County Agricultural Center on Monday evening.

Deputies said a small buck darted in front of the cruiser at around 9:45 p.m and the deputy couldn't avoid hitting it.

The deputy was unhurt but the deer was killed, deputies said.

The front end of the 1999 Crown Victoria was damaged, and the car will be out service indefinitely, deputies said.


Break-ins reported to City Police

A number of break-ins have been reported to Hagerstown City Police in recent days.

* A thief took tools and a boom box, total value $700, from 202 Fairground Ave. on Sunday.

* Cash and a money order valued at $155 were taken from 112 E. Baltimore St., also on Sunday.

* On Monday, police were alerted to a break-in and theft at 119 Linden Ave. where a rear door was broken out and cash was taken.

Pa. police probe theft of Blazer

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Pennsylvania State Police are continuing to investigate the theft of a 1987 Chevrolet Blazer from a Greene Township home Saturday morning.

The vehicle, belonging to Odessa G. Wright, 66, of the 2200 block of Letterkenny Road, was stolen between 4 and 11 a.m., police said. A black leather jacket belonging to her son was inside the Blazer when it was taken.

The Blazer and contents are worth about $8,000, police said. It has Pennsylvania license plate BVA-4187.

High-speed chase ends in crash

FREDERICK, Md. - A driver and his passenger escaped injury in a crash after a high-speed chase in Frederick County on Sunday, Frederick County Sheriff's deputies said.

Deputies said they clocked a car going 87 mph in a 55 mph zone around 4:41 p.m. on U.S. 15 at Roddy Road.

The officer followed the car and put on his lights and siren, but the driver did not stop, deputies alleged.

Police chased the driver on St. Anthony's Road, Helmer Road and Kelbaugh Road, where he lost control on a turn and ran off the right side of the road, deputies alleged.

The car hit an embankment, went airborne and crashed into a tree, deputies said.

During a search of the car, two plastic bags of suspected marijuana were found in a coat in the back seat, deputies alleged.

The driver, Chad E. Dewees, 18, of 100 Adams St., Woodsboro, Md., was charged with fleeing and eluding, going 87 mph in a 55 mph zone, reckless driving, failure to drive right of center, driving while on a learner's permit without supervision, driving a rental car in violation of a rental agreement and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.

Dewees was released on his own recognizance.

The passenger was released to a parent without being charged.

Walkersville man faces drug charge

FREDERICK, Md. - A Walkersville man was arrested late Monday after Frederick City Police observed him in a drug transaction near the John Hanson Apartments.

James Philip Smith, 51, of the 7800 block of Treasure Avenue, was charged with possession of cocaine after the 10:47 p.m. incident.

He was awaiting a bond hearing this morning.
