Shots fired into apartment

January 05, 2000

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A barrage of gunfire broke out late Tuesday at a Roberts Gardens apartment, but no one was injured and the motive remains unclear, according to the Berkeley County Sheriff's Department.

Deputies found 12 shell casings from a .45-caliber handgun and a .38-caliber handgun after shots were fired at 11:15 p.m., said Lt. Kenny Lemaster.

The shots were fired into the door of an apartment in Building 403 at the public housing complex on U.S. 11 north of Martinsburg, Lemaster said. He declined to say which apartment was the target.

Deputies weren't sure who lives in the apartment, but there were people there when the shots came through a door and struck a couch, Lemaster said.

Deputies were unclear Wednesday about the number of people in the apartment and their identities.

After the shooting, several men were seen leaving the scene in two cars, one black and the other green, Lemaster said.

Roberts Gardens has a history of illegal drug activity and last year was the scene of a killing, Lemaster said.
