Va Center to turn on generators before midnight

December 30, 1999

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Patients and residents at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center don't need to worry about Y2K concerns as officials plan to turn on a backup generator just before the new year begins.

The backup generator will be activated at 11:30 tonight as a precaution in case there is a power outage, said spokeswoman Doris Griffin.

Approximately eight people will be working at the Medical Center's command post tonight, including the chief nurse, chief engineer and employees at the center's boiler plant and water treatment plant, Griffin said.

The command post was staffed beginning Wednesday at 12:01 a.m. and will be until 8 a.m. on Monday when the center reopens for regular business, Griffin said.

As of early Thursday the center had 486 of its 559 beds full, she said. The center has a hospital, a nursing home and a residential rehabilitation program.
