Mail Call for 12/27

December 27, 1999

Editor's note - Please be as brief as possible when calling Mail Call, The Daily Mail's reader call-in line.

Mail Call is not staffed on weekends or holidays so it is best to call Mail Call during the week. The Mail Call number is 301-791-6236.

You are welcome to leave a recorded message on any subject, but some calls will be screened out.

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"In regards to the lady in the North End who has no heat. I suggest that she either calls the mayor or the County Commissioners or the Housing Authority."

"Tell the lady who wants the frosting that she can buy the fluffy white icing at Martin's."

"These Beanies are about over with. I just wanted to say to the stores that I went into, I asked for Beanies and they acted nasty about it and gave me the brush off. I just want to say thank you to those stores and that I will never come back in there to buy anything again."

"The good and bad about the Y2K. The Mercersburg family is all stocked up, just in case. What about those poor devils out there who cannot afford to stock up? Is the Mercersburg family going to share with them?"

"Your old vehicle goes bad beyond repair and you have to buy another. What? Another Christmas card? They just won't wait to show a date for that great emissions test. Merry Christmas in December."

"I have two questions. Isn't Congressman Bartlett on the Armed Services Committee? If so, why isn't he helping to speed up the Army's turnover at Fort Ritchie? Secondly, why doesn't Glendening be fair and let the people of Washington County and Hagerstown decide by referendum where to locate the University of Maryland building?"

"If the County Commissioners want a new stadium, why don't they pay for it?"

"For those who are crying about the traffic patterns at the Valley Mall, if you pay attention, read the signs, watch the other drivers, obey the directions, obey the traffic laws and don't be aggressive, you will lessen your chance of a wreck. The new traffic pattern was engineered correctly and yes, even when the police are not present, you are still to obey the law."

"In reference to the person complaining about the water and sewer bill and they want the stadium money to pay for it. We have helped the Hagerstown city, water and sewer pay our own bills. We don't want to help pay for yours. I would much rather have my money go to the stadium rather than pay for your water and sewer."

"To the person looking for the Betty Crocker Fluffy White frosting mix, the only place I have been able to find it is at Giant Food in Frederick."

"To the mayor and council, why is it that the birds have to be chased out of the downtown area? Why is the snow removed from the downtown area? Is all of this done for the convenience of City Hall? That is why the parking deck was placed close to City Hall and now the college. What about the rest of the taxpayers in town? Without us, you would not be paid or anything else. Come on people take back your government."

"To the state delegation from Washington County, when is the state of Maryland going to issue new license plates for our vehicles? Get rid of those birds, I am sure that we can come up with something better. As for the college, put it out next to the Hagerstown Community College. Overrule Glendening. The only thing on his mind is what job he can get with Gore's administration. I think they will both have to go to work for a living. We need people power, VOTE!!!"

"About the comment in Mail Call about the fire department. They said that they couldn't go out and collect the money from people is because they were out fighting a fire. That stinks. There is no fire that burns 24 hours a day and every day of the week."

"This is to everyone in Washington County, Md. I would like to wish them a very very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from Donnie Thomas. I know a lot of you out there. This is a very great community. I think everyone in this community should be proud of themselves for what we have done and how great we get along. We have had some problems, but we get through them. I hope everyone has a great New Year!"

"I want to wish my husband, Steve, a very merry Christmas and thank him for the past 12 months of our lives together. What a big change in our lives you have made and how happy you have made our son. Also, God works in mysterious ways and I have to agree because God sure did answer our prayers. Thank you for coming back into our lives. All of our love to you from Colleen and Clayton. Also, merry Christmas, Madonna, we love you, from your family, Steve, Colleen and Clayton."
