December 24, 1999

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - An accident on Interstate 81 near Greencastle, Pa., killed one person and caused a traffic jam when the highway was shut down in both directions Thursday night.

Police and rescue personnel were busy on the scene until past deadline and could not release any details.

Crews were working near a sport utility vehicle that appeared to have overturned in the median of the highway. The Franklin County coroner was attending to a body near the vehicle.

The accident occurred between Exit 3, which is Pa. 16 at Greencastle, and Exit 4, at Marion, at about 10 p.m.

About half a dozen ambulances were called, but not all of them were needed, according to authorities at the scene.

Traffic was stopped for both directions for at least an hour. The southbound lanes reopened at 11:30.

Traffic was being funneling onto to U.S. 11 through Greencastle.
