A large hay bale was intentionally set on fire in the middle of a farm field east of Funkstown Thursday morning, according to the Maryland State Fire Marshal's office.
Firefighters from Funkstown and Boonsboro arrived shortly after the 8:27 a.m. call from the property caretaker of the farm at 9651 Old National Pike.
Because of the terrain, Funkstown was unable to get to the scene of the fire so Boonsboro brought a four-wheel drive brush truck.
Deputy Chief Fire Marshal Ted Meminger said the firefighters, who quickly doused the blaze, found beer and soda containers at the scene.
