Mail Call for 12/21

December 22, 1999

Editor's note - Please be as brief as possible when calling Mail Call, The Daily Mail's reader call-in line.

Mail Call is not staffed on weekends or holidays so it is best to call Mail Call during the week. The Mail Call number is 301-791-6236.

You are welcome to leave a recorded message on any subject, but some calls will be screened out.

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"We, the officers of the Women of the Moose Lodge 2116, do hearby wish our sincere appreciation in help to the Dollar Store on Pennsylvania Avenue for all their help for purchasing the toys for our children's Christmas party. We also wish to thank Linda Attard for her help and generosity, sincerely."

"I am calling about the write-up in the paper where Mary Pearson said that the Western Maryland Hospital Center is like a morgue on Christmas Day. I think she should have talked to the patients first before she said this. She should spend the day with them and talk to them about what they do for Christmas Day and what all of the staff does for the patients. It is nice that she is having a party for the patients, but it is not a morgue on Christmas Day for the Western Maryland Hospital Center!"

"Hagerstown's new city police chief is doing an excellent job. I can see that the behavior of the motorists and things around town are very nice. Welcome to Hagerstown and I hope that all the citizens cooperate with you. I see the police force in action now. Good job."

"This is for the person who lives six blocks from the Boonsboro post office and does not receive his mail until 6 p.m. I think this is disgraceful and I suggest that you stop paying for home delivery and rent a post office box. That way you could walk to the post office and get your mail whenever you wanted to. That would show them. By the way, how much does it cost for home delivery these days? Is it more or less than a newspaper? You also asked why they can't hire more people. I would like to know also. After all, we have asked them to cut the size of government and not our service. Wait a minute, no wonder the government is in such a mess, they don't know what us taxpayers want to do, hire or fire. I guess we cannot have it both ways. FYI, it is letter carriers, not mailmen. No, I am not a postal employee, nor would I ever consider being one. They work too long and hard and have to put up with us taxpayers. Keep up the good work and Happy Holidays. Some of us do understand."

"Why does Sen. Mooney want to lose our stadium for us, by not supporting our tax? It is not going to hurt our hotel business. Even if you stay at the bed and breakfast and you paid an extra dollar a night, when you are paying $100 a night for a room, who cares about an extra dollar?"

"I have a question for the churches. They want the Ten Commandments hung up at the courthouse and in the schools, yet they have the billboards in front of the churches, They don't have the Ten Commandments on there, all they have is those dumb sayings on them and they don't have any scriptures on them. Why is that?"

"You firemen, get off of your butts and go out and collect from the people. There are a lot of people that can't get out and would like to give to you, but you have to go out and get it."

"I called about the cats at my house a few weeks ago, and I needed some help in getting them or take them for me. There was lady who responded and I was given a number to call a Fran, well I never got a hold of a Fran. If she could please call me back or leave another message in Mail Call. I am still trying to find a home for them. They are cold and hungry."

"I would like to thank Sharpsburg American Legion Post 236 for the wonderful senior citizens dinner that they had on Dec. 5. I would also like to say thanks to their president, Beverly Fogle. She did an excellent job, everything went well, the food was terrific and the help was wonderful. To the people of Sharpsburg, thanks very much because my mother and father enjoyed it very much."

"I lost my wallet recently and some very kind person found it and returned it by sticking it in my mailbox on Route 40, National Pike. I would like to thank this person in person, so I can give them a reward and find out where they found it. So please stop by so I can show my appreciation to you. With all the things that are going on in this world, there are still some very honest people. I hope that you have a wonderful Christmas and a nice New Year. Please stop by and see me."

"I am a hearing impaired senior citizen and I depend a lot on the closed caption. I don't find any fault with any channel but Channel 25 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. for the evening news. What a sorry mess. Why doesn't the engineers check it out and they will see what I mean."

"I would like to know who designed the traffic patterns around this county. The Valley Mall has to be the worst mess I have ever seen in my life. I can't believe that anyone would design a thing like that. Did the County Commissioners do it?"

"I want to take this time to say thank you to the staff and the people who work for the Maintenance Department at the Alexander House for all the hard work that they have done over the past year. I don't think the ladies in the office get enough credit. You folks should be getting more credit than what you are getting. As a resident, I appreciate all the hard work that you are doing. I know how hard you folks are working."
