Fire rekindles at Dry Road home

Firefighters returned early Monday to a Dry Road home when a fire they extinguished Sunday afternoon rekindled, according to the State Fire Marshal's office.

Firefighters were called back to 1912 Day Road at 12:20 a.m., according to Washington County Fire and Rescue Communications.

The initial blaze caused $10,000 in damages. The home was occupied by Donald Baker Jr., his son, daughter-in-law and their two children.

The fire started Sunday at 2:29 p.m. in the second-story bedroom, where a portable space heater ignited clothing and other combustibles nearby, investigators said.

Smoke from the fire was noticed by a passer-by, who informed Baker. He was home alone and got out safely.

 

Pedestrians hurt in Chambersburg

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Two pedestrians were hospitalized for injuries they received in separate accidents Monday morning in the borough, according to Chambersburg Police Department reports.

The first accident happened at 6:50 a.m. when a Chevy Astro van driven by Robert Preisler, address unavailable, struck Jordan S. Crull, age and address unavailable, on the 600 block of Philadelphia Ave., according to police. The report said the southbound van hit Crull as he was crossing the street.

A Chambersburg Hospital nursing supervisor said Crull was in satisfactory condition Monday night.

At 7:29 a.m. on North Second Street near the Broad Street intersection, a Plymouth Reliant driven by Lawrence Brown, address unavailable, struck Lester Berger as he was walking across the street, police said.

Berger, age and address unavailable, was listed in serious condition Monday night at Chambersburg Hospital, according to the nursing supervisor.

The accidents are under investigation, police said.

 

Fire puts family of four out of home

THURMONT, Md. - The Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal was trying to determine the cause of a fire that displaced a family of four Monday.

No one was home at the time of the 9:35 a.m. fire to 26 N. Church St., Thurmont, Frederick County.

The three-story home is occupied by Jeffrey and April Rinehart and their two children.

The family was being assisted by the American Red Cross.

Investigators said the fire started on the porch, traveled up the walls and damaged the attic and roof.

Minor damaged was found in the first and second floors of the home.

About 50 firefighters from Thurmont, Graceham, Rocky Ridge, Emmitsburg, Independence and Woodsboro went to the fire.

The damages are estimated at $85,000, investigators said.

 

Vintage Honda motorcycle taken

Hagerstown City Police were investigating the theft Sunday of a 1974 green and chrome Honda motorcycle from 239 E. Baltimore St.

The license number is Maryland 03155LD.

 

In other reported incidents:

* Thieves took more than $4,700 in electronics, jewelry and clothing from an apartment in the 200 block of North Cannon Avenue on Sunday, police said.

n of file Police were notified Sunday of the theft of $60 worth of assorted Christmas lights from a home in the 500 block of Claire Street.

* A Nintendo machine and games, valued at $420, were taken from a home in the 400 block of Sumans Avenue on Saturday, police said.

* Three construction trailers at the Centre at Hagerstown construction site on U.S. 40 west were broken into and tools were taken.

Victims included Warren Electric of Myersville, Perini Construction of Hagerstown and Ziegler Mechanical of Winchester, Va., police said.

 

Tools stolen

NEEDMORE, Pa. - Tools valued in excess of $700 were taken from a home Sunday in the 4000 block of Pleasant Ridge Road, according to Pennsylvania State Police in McConnellsburg.

Several drills, a staple gun, a battery and charger were taken, police said.

 

Pa. man arrested on Calif. drug warrant

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - A check of a car Sunday night in Guilford Township turned up a man wanted in California on drug charges, Pennsylvania State Police in Chambersburg said.

Joshua Kent Greene, 25, of Chambersburg, was found to have an active warrant on file in Los Angeles charging him with manufacturing a controlled substance, police said.

His companion in the vehicle, Justin Byron Over, 24, also of Chambersburg, was charged with possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, police said.

The incident occurred on Oak Leaf Road at Duffield Road.
