Mail Call for 12/15

December 15, 1999

Editor's note - Please be as brief as possible when calling Mail Call, The Daily Mail's reader call-in line.

Mail Call is not staffed on weekends or holidays so it is best to call Mail Call during the week. The Mail Call number is 301-791-6236.

You are welcome to leave a recorded message on any subject, but some calls will be screened out.

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"For the last three years I have been talking to some nice older and younger women that say hello to me in many ways on the road. I would like to thank them. They have taught me so much. Merry Christmas."

"I don't go to church any more, the day I left there, the preacher was still telling the congregation to give whatever they felt in their hearts. He told them that Jesus had given them a chance to eternal life and they should show their appreciation by giving until it hurt. Well I was hurt by that statement and I felt a whole lot better when I walked out."

"Congratulations to The Daily Mail for the new format. I love it. As for the names of the deceased on the front page, don't let the public discourage you, it's great. For our fast-paced today, it is nice to glance at the names, in case you cannot take the time at that moment to sit down and open up the paper. The public can make changes if they want to, look at the changes that the Mail has made, and people have adjusted there."

"My name is Sharon and my number is 301-582-9711. I am calling to all the people in Hagerstown. There was a family that was burned out of their home on Sunday. They need clothes for their children, sizes 10 male, age 6 male and females age 10 and 3, clothes sizes are the same sizes are approximately the same as the age. Anyone that can help, please call."

"I am calling in concern over the controversy of the stadium. All of the money already spent unnecessarily could have been put into the old stadium. Let's say you put $100,000 into the old stadium, you would really have a new stadium. That would be a lot better than the way it is going to be spending anywhere from $12 to $15 million dollars. It is foolish the way Hagerstown politicians have thrown away money like the ice rink and that plant across from the stadium. That could have been an extra parking lot, now it is just a wasted piece of land."

"I am calling about letting the people vote in the election on the ball park and the Baldwin House. Can we do that or not? Or are the ones involved afraid? They know the answer they'll get. Nobody wants either one of them."

"I am calling about the person saying that we should not criticize the mayor or governor. Well, I think that we are able to have freedom of the press and believe me this is a press. If they would think about what they are doing, they would know that it is all wrong. I think what they should do is sit down and talk to each other and find out that everything is wrong."

"Monday, I spent the day at E. Russell Hicks Middle and the teachers are underpaid with the lack of respect and discipline that the children have today. They should go back to the way it was when I went to school in the '60s and '70s with the corporal punishment. The school system today is terrible. The lack of respect, the I don't care attitudes and not doing your work, it's just terrible. The people should just respect the teachers and try to get more money for what they do. It is a hard job."

"About two weeks ago there was an article in the paper about two men who were taking old computers and doing something with them, I would like to know their phone numbers, so I can call them, I have a computer."

"To the person who called in and said that Dr. Bartlett's budget should only get a two percent increase in Social Security. You say property owners should watch out that they are coming after your property taxes again. Well, in the six years that I have lived in Washington County, property taxes have only been raised once and that was for the good old water and sewer debt. The School Board needs a 10 percent increase from last year, just to keep the budget going. So before you talk, know what you are talking about."

"About the stuff being stolen at Rest Haven Cemetery, I have had things taken off of my wife's grave before. I have notified the police several times and they said there is nothing they can do about it. I think people who steal from the dead are very, very rude. The decorations are put out there by their loved ones. The Lord up above is looking down on them. One of these days they are going to be held accountable for what they have done and they are going to be in that grave and someone is going to take stuff off of theirs and their children are going to yell about it. Keep away from the graveyard."
