Monday's Francis Scott Key-North Hagerstown game was a classic battle of the long and the short of it.

And because the Hubs took the short cut, they got the best of it.

North Hagerstown pounded the ball inside and used its defensive quickness to frustrated FSK's shooters during their Mad Bomber imitation. The Hubs used its close range ability to pull away for a convincing 87-64 Monocacy Valley Athletic League victory.

"We knew what to expect. We knew they were a great shooting team," North coach Tim McNamee said. "Our plan was to establish the inside game and if you can do that, you can work the ball inside out."

The Hubs used the size of Jason Ott and Chris Everett to control the paint, leaving the guards to pester the Eagles on the perimeter. FSK tried to get the win via air mail, hitting 16 of 34 shots from 3-point range. In fact, the Eagles had only six baskets inside the 3-point arc, including one as a gift from North when center Eddie Crivari laid in a missed FSK free throw.

North got everything it needed with 17 offensive rebounds to go with 12 steals, including seven thefts resulting in 15 points in the final 9 1/2 minutes of the game.

"We don't have much size so we can't go in there," FSK coach Jeff Cook said. "They started getting steals from us and then they were getting a lot of second and third shots."

The Hubs used a 12-0 run over a 2-minute, 16-second span that overlapped the first and second quarter to move to a 26-11 lead, led by Scott Rice, who scored 7 of his game-high 20 in the process. North started playing man defense, but moved into a press and a 2-1-2 zone to cover the perimeter while limiting FSK's chances inside.

Tater Russ had 15 points and 11 assists for North while Evan Medley had 13 points and nine rebounds.
