Sharpsburg to give money to Toys for Tots, memorial

December 06, 1999

A group that collects Christmas gifts for needy children, and a group raising money for a veterans memorial will receive contributions from the Town of Sharpsburg.

The Sharpsburg Town Council on Monday voted unanimously to contribute $200 to the Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program.

The council also unanimously voted to give up to $1,000 to the Joint Veterans Council of Washington County toward the completion of a veterans memorial. The veterans council is raising money to complete a 140-foot stone wall memorial to veterans at the Martin L. "Marty" Snook Park in Halfway.

Sharpsburg Mayor George Kesler said he would ask the group how much money they still need to determine whether Sharpsburg will contribute $1,000 or less toward the memorial.

Last month the veterans council was $5,000 away from meeting its fund-raising goal, according to a veterans council official.
